The 2008 Fall season has gotten underway with practice resuming on August 25th. Roughly twenty athletes have returned to both the men’s and women’s team respectively. Coach John Bancheri, the Director of Rowing at GVSU, has taken over coaching duties of the men’s and women’s varsity program. Coach Bancheri said, “I am very excited to be working with this group of men and women. We have a lot of experienced athletes returning from a successful season last year and I expect them to continue to improve.”

The men return several athletes from the ACRA third place and Henley Royal Regatta quarterfinalist varsity eight, the Dad Vail Champion JV eight, and the Dad Vail finalist frosh/novice eight. Open seats left from members not returning is anticipated to raise the level of intersquad competition early in the fall.

On the women’s side, many from the Dad Vail DII/DIII Silver medalist and Henley Women’s Regatta quarterfinalist varsity eight return. Also returning are several members from the undefeated and Dad Vail Champion women’s frosh/novice eight. Coach Bob Stanage, who guided last years’ novice women, will also be moving up to serve as the varsity assistant coach.

The Laker Navy will kick off the fall season with a trip to the University of Western Ontario the weekend of September 21st to the place in the U. of Western Ontario Invitational Challenge Cup. Soon after, the Lakers will be sending several oarsmen to Boston, MA to compete at the Head of the Charles Regatta. Grand Valley looks to improve on last fall’s fourth place finish in the men’s and women’s Collegiate Eight race.

The Grand Valley State University Rowing Club challenges its student-athletes to reach the highest level to which they aspire both academically and athletically, while continuing to build and sustain a nationally competitive intercollegiate rowing program.
