Don Lubbers Cup Regatta to Bring Top Rowers to Compete on Spring Lake

On April 14, 2012, Spring Lake, Michigan will become a competitive venue for an elite rowing event, known as the Don Lubbers Cup Regatta (Lubbers Cup).

The committee, made up of members from the communities of Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Grand Haven, the Spring Lake Yacht Club, The Chamber Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, and the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Rowing Club, has begun planning for the 17th Annual Don Lubbers Cup Regatta. The local communities are excited to be the host location for this annual event. Rowing has long taken place on the areas waterways, dating back to 1874 when the Grand Haven & Spring Lake Rowing Association sponsored an invitational regatta on Spring Lake, attracting participants from Detroit and Chicago. That same year, a local resident, Frank E. Yates, won the American Championship.

Chamber President, Joy Gaasch stated, “Partnering with GVSU to bring rowers from all over the Midwest and East Coast to Spring Lake is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our communities to parents, students and faculty. With a sense of pride we can all celebrate Spring Lake’s amazing heritage in the sport of rowing.”

The committee is working diligently to ensure this is the best regatta to date, starting the planning process earlier than last year in preparation for the event. The regatta will begin at 8:00am on the 14th of April and run through the afternoon. “Major changes have already been put into place for this year’s event,” comments Lubbers Cup Intern Coordinator and GVSU rower, Ryan Kasley. “The race course direction has been altered to start at the west end of Spring Lake, near Viets Landing. The race will continue past the Spring Lake Yacht Club and finish at Lakeside Beach, Spring Lake, which will allow better opportunity for viewers to enjoy the competition.” Additionally, a high school race component has also been added to expand the event. Rockford High School, Cranbrook Prep School (Detroit), Absegami High School (New Jersey) and St. Augustine Prep High School (New Jersey) will have a special morning race the day of the event.

“The Lubbers Cup, now in its 17th year, has seen marked growth in the number of participants as the race grew in popularity in the Midwest and throughout the United States and Canada. More importantly, the increased competitiveness of club rowing programs in the past five years has brought a whole new level of boat speed to the Lubbers Cup,” John Bancheri, Director of GVSU Rowing and Varsity Men’s Coach stated. Competing this year are the teams of GVSU, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, along with Ohio State University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Cincinnati, and Drake University. “For the past three years, the winner of the Lubbers Cup was also the winner of the ACRA (American Collegiate Rowing Association) National Championship Regatta. This in and of itself, proves the high level of competition to which the event has risen. The Lubbers Cup has become and early season event that shows the rowing world who has the speed needed to compete at a national level.”
