Laker Navy MACRA Team Points Champions
For the second year in a row, the Laker Navy claimed the overall team points trophy as the top combined team at the MACRA Championship Regatta. From top to bottom the entire team found success; at the end of the day many GVSU athletes found medals hanging around their necks.
Building off of the success at Lubbers Cup, the women’s varsity 8+ repeated as MACRA gold medalists, finishing five seconds ahead of the pack. The varsity four took second place in the petite final, just missing the grand final. For the novice women, both eight and four placed, with the eight finishing first and the four finishing second in their respective grand finals.
The men’s eight finished third in their final, finishing behind the Michigan Wolverines and Mercyhurst, falling just short of second. The novice eight also took second. Overcoming a rough start and starting a length down from all crews, the determined boat charged back to claim their podium finish. Finishing the day on a strong note, the novice four took first in the petite final, greatly improving from their first race in the morning.
A big part of the team points championship was owed to the two 2V eights. In their third races of the day, the two men and women’s boats gave the team the needed boost in points to come out on top. Altogether, it was a true team effort to bring home the trophy.
The team now turns to Philadelphia and the Dad Vail regatta. We would like to thank the friends and family of the Laker Navy who came out to support the team, and to those that were cheering from home. Keep pulling for the Laker Navy!.
