Laker Navy Has a Successful Bald Eagle Collegiate Invite

The Laker Navy traveled to Indianapolis, IN to compete in the first annual Bald Eagle Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Purdue. An unseasonably warm afternoon, the calm water and light wind was in stark contrast to the Head of the Eagle of 2015. It was a beautiful day for the entire team to race. Both varsity and novice teams took to the water to close off the 2016 fall season.

The women’s team closed off the fall on a strong note. Medaling in a majority of their races, the highlight of the afternoon was the varsity women’s 8+ taking first in their final race of the day, finishing eleven seconds ahead of Purdue. Following in stride, the novice women’s 8+ also took first in their race. The varsity 8+ “B” boat finished third in their event, along with the novice “B” 8+. The “A” women’s four finished second, with the “B and “C” boat finishing second and third in their respective events.

A culmination of the hard work put in by the women, the improvements made by this young group were apparent on the water.

The men faced strong competition from the University of Michigan, Virginia, and the Wisconsin Badgers. After hitting a buoy on the course, the men’s varsity 8+ finished 5th overall. The “B” boat finished 6th, varsity 4+ 6th and novice 8+ 6th. A check point for the team, the winter season represents an opportunity for the men to get stronger, and most importantly, faster.

The club will be hosting the frostbite regatta on November 12th, an inter-squad race located at the “Quarry” not far from GVSU. Check back here in the near future for more details and directions. A special thanks to all of the parents who took the time to travel to Indy and the support of all of those at home. The team thanks you for your support and, as always, keep pulling for the Laker Navy!
