Laker Navy competed at the Dad Vail

The Laker Navy returns from another great Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia PA. The weather cooperated with us all weekend and all crews enjoyed some beautiful racing conditions on the Schuylkill river. We were excited to see how our crews match up against some of the fastest varsity teams in the nation.

Friday was hot and sunny but the Laker Navy was ready to take on the competition in time trials in the morning. The Women’s 2x and 8+ successfully qualified for semis later that afternoon along with the Men’s Novice 4+, JV 4+ and 8+. The women’s Varsity Pair was the first race in the afternoon, and they finished second in their semi, placing them right in the grand final. The women’s 2x and men’s JV4+ placed into the 3rd final on Sunday. Next, the men’s novice 4+ fought hard and placed into the petit final. The women’s varsity 8+ raced a very exciting semifinal to place themselves into the grand final! They were the only club team to race in the Grand Final. The men’s varsity 8+ fought a tough semifinal heat and placed into the 3rd final.

Saturday started out cold and rainy but the rain let up before any racing took place. First up for the finals day was the men’s Novice 4+ who placed 2nd in their petit final! The women’s 2x placed 5th in a tough race in the 3rd final. Up next was the men’s JV4+ who fought with fellow Midwest crews Ohio State and Purdue to finish 5th in their 3rd final too. After a short break, the men’s Varsity 8+ came down the Schuylkill in their 3rd final. With four boats including Marietta, Bucknell and Minnesota within seconds of each other at 500m, the Laker Navy pulled out in front for first place in their final! Next was the Grand Final of the women’s Varsity Pair! Even while navigating the infamous Dad Vail turn without a coxswain, the pair took home the Laker Navy’s best finish in 4th! Last race of the day was the Grand Final for the women’s Varsity 8+! We anxiously waited a few hours for their race together, enjoying cheesesteaks and refreshments at the gorgeous venue. With the grandstands filled with fans, the women of the 8+ barreled down the Schuylkill in a tough race filled with varsity teams. They ended up 6th but spirits were high.

We are now headed back to Allendale to rest and prepare for the ACRA regatta in two weeks! Thanks to all of the parents, fans and alumni who came out to support us this weekend!

Keep pulling for the Laker Navy!
