2015 GVSU Head of the Charles Men’s Eight

Laker Navy Preparing for the 52nd Charles

The eyes of the rowing world turn to Boston, Massachusetts for the 52nd Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest two-day regatta in the world. The Laker Navy’s best will be joining hundreds of other crews this upcoming weekend. This event is the pinnacle of the fall racing schedule.

The varsity squad has been competing all fall for a chance to represent their team and their university on a national scale. The team will be sending three boats: a collegiate men’s 8+, collegiate women’s 8+, and a men’s collegiate 4+. The men’s eight will look to improve upon last years 10th place finish. The men will compete against crews such as the University of Michigan, Virginia, and Delaware. A young women’s eight also looks to be competitive, facing UCSB, Trinity College, and others.

Even with the significance of this event, all involved also recognize the importance of this race as preparation for the spring season. The ultimate goal, the triple crown, lies ahead. For many, this will be their first true test as a varsity athlete. First time varsity athletes and seniors alike will try to make the biggest impact possible for the team.

An excited and anxious GVSU Crew will depart for Boston this Thursday evening. Friday will be a swing row down the course in preparation for racing. The men’s alumni 8+ will be the only GV boat competing Saturday, racing at 12:12 PM. Sunday will feature the men’s 8+ at 3:15 and the women’s 8+ at 3:31.
