Laker Navy Celebrates Homecoming

The Laker Navy joined the homecoming festivities this weekend, hosting several events around the GVSU campus.

To start the day, the annual alum vs. novice races were held in the early morning. Both men and women’s novice teams faced the alumni crews, eager to get back in the boat. Both men and women’s alumni boats edged out the novice crews, however the officiating was suspect.

Regardless of the results, fun was had by all.

Following the races, the Laker Navy christened two newly named boats, along with the new single. The Costas V. Ciungan, Nick Maodush-Pitzer, and the Scott Thorbjornsen were christened. With fresh champaign on their bows, the boats were taken on their maiden voyages with alums, athletes, and supporters cheering them by. We thank Coastas, Nick, and Scott for their time on the team

To wrap up the festivities, the Grand Valley Rowing Alumni Association hosted a homecoming tailgate. Former athletes and coach’s gathered over hot food on a cool fall afternoon.

It was a busy weekend for the entire Laker Navy. The team now turns to the Head of the Charles next weekend. Check back for the latest updates, and as always, pull for the Laker Navy!
