Head of the Grand Regatta

With the fall season proceeding rapidly, the GVSU Rowing Club starts racing at the the Head of the Grand in East Lansing. This two mile race is hosted by the Michigan State University Spartans. Both novice and varsity alike are ready to race, preparing to face teams such as MSU, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Northern Michigan, as well as others.

With the 2016 spring season in the past, the varsity teams turn to the new season ahead. The many hours spent at practice are in preparation for events like this, a time to let loose and compete.

For the novice crews, this will be their first taste of competition. They will be able to test their new abilities, with their family and friends cheering them on. A sport that they have less than one month’s experience in, these new rowers have come a long way from day one.

Winners of three straight Head of the Grand’s, the novice men will be looking to defend their title as the top novice crew. The novice women will face tough competition from the start, facing division one varsity programs, such as Michigan State and Eastern Michigan University.

The preliminary regatta schedule can be found here.

It’s going to be a great weekend for the Laker Navy! As one of the few regattas in state, we hope to see you on the shores of the Grand River. The race will be held at MSU’s Boathouse in Grand River Park, just outside of Lansing, MI. We hope to see you on Sunday!

The Grand Valley State University Rowing Club challenges its student-athletes to reach the highest level to which they aspire both academically and athletically, while continuing to build and sustain a nationally competitive intercollegiate rowing program.
