Laker Navy Has Strong Showing at Head of the Grand

Traveling with a full trailer and lots of excitement, the Laker Navy made its way over to East Lansing for the Head of the Grand Regatta. This marked the beginning of the fall racing season and the first time that the novice represented Grand Valley in competition.

The novice boats all performed well, with the novice men winning their race and the novice women taking second. Jacob Spiess, a Freshman mechanical engineering major, was excited about his first regatta of the year. “I was really excited to race today and had a blast on the water. It was an early morning but totally worth it.”

The varsity men also had a good day, sweeping the pairs event and winning the eight. Additionally, the varsity women showed their remarkable determination; racing division one programs MSU and Eastern Michigan. Both crews now have a starting point for the year, a benchmark for their training for the Head of the Charles.

Overall the team took first place in the team points competition, highlighted by the novice men’s victory over their competition.

A special thanks goes out to all the parents for showing their Laker pride, bringing both cheers and food to East Lansing. It was another successful trip for the team. Thank you for all who came out! Keep pulling for the Laker Navy!
