The Grand Valley women have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Henley Women’s Regatta to be held today at 1:30 pm (8:30am est). The Laker Navy was victorious this morning in the round of sixteen as they squared off against the National University of Ireland. With the wind near dead and a light rain, conditions were a bit faster. The Lakers burst off the line to a near boat length advantage by the shift to pace. Coxswain Katie Higgins added, “The start was much sharper than yesterday afternoon, and I think there is still room to improve.” At the shift, the ladies pushed further with a long, controlled stroke rate. Midway through, the Lakers held a three boat length lead and settled into a relaxed rhythm, coasting in at 5.20 and 2 ½ lengths ahead.

The Lakers expect a difficult race this afternoon in the round of eight. Thames Rowing Club pushed out ahead of Trinity College, USA ‘B’ early and finished 2 lengths ahead in a time of 5.10. Junior Sarah Zelenka comments, “Our two races have prepared us, and I think we are ready to push ourselves this afternoon.”

Grand Valley Rowing challenges its student-athletes to reach the highest level to which they aspire both academically and athletically, while continuing to build and sustain a nationally competitive intercollegiate rowing program.
