The Grand Valley State women squared off in a match race against Thames Rowing Club in the quarterfinals of the Henley Women’s Regatta. The skies were clear with a light head wind, making for conditions slightly slower than the morning round. TRC came off the line quickly and had a deck lead at the shift. With the crews lengthening, Thames jumped out with a long, controlled rate to a six seat advantage. GVSU fought hard from behind and made a slight push back into the Thames crew, but started to fade at the half-way point.

Sophomore Sam Morgan said about the race, “They took us off the start and we never fell back into rhythm. We fought hard, but we were fighting from behind. It was a great effort but we fell a bit short today.”

The Lakers fell by a length and a half to TRC, Thames finishing the race in a time of 5.24.

Coach Bob Stanage said, “We came to England to face the best clubs in the world. This afternoon we ran into a crew faster than us and did just that. Hats off to Thames Rowing Club. We did our best, and that is what we came to do.”

The Grand Valley varsity eight will remain in England to tour for a few days. Thank you to everyone who supported the trip and made this experience of a lifetime possible.
