The GVSU Henley squad will continue its participation in the Henley Royal Regatta tomorrow as the Jesus College Spare Pairs race kicks off at 10:00am. The pairing of Dan Schoolcraft 10’ and Marty Reed 12’ will race the Goldie Boat Club ‘B’ entry as St. Joseph’s Prep, USA competes against Goldie Boat Club ‘A’ on the other side of the bracket. Each winner will square off in the final at 11:00am. GVSU won the spare pairs race in 2008, when the team last traveled overseas.

Both the men and women competed at the Reading Town Regatta last weekend with good results over the 800m race course. The women’s four comprised of Sam Morgan (stroke), Laura Marshall, Alex VanderArk, Kelsey Arnold, and Aly Mendels (cox) won the intermediate coxed four comfortably. In the last race of the day, the women’s eight seating Katie Phelan (stroke), Lauren Adlof, Lindsey Marshall, Kendra Socks, Lauren Holben, Tamara Hillman, Leslie Mayville, Hannah Brinza, and Aly Mendels (cox) won the women’s senior eight against Green Lake Crew, USA. The women also raced in the novice double. The Reading Town Regatta marked the end to another very successful season for the Laker Navy women. The men’s team competed in the Intermediate 1 Eight, Senior Eight, Intermediate 1 Four, and Intermediate Pair. The four lost in the final to Georgetown University, USA by a length, but showed their speed in the heat holding off a fast Yale, USA crew. GVSU also fell in the senior eight final, to the Youth National Champion crew from Kent School, USA. The short races provided the men an opportunity to test their rig and adjust the lineups in a final tune up to the Henley Royal Regatta.

The Grand Valley four qualified for the Henley Royal Regatta in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup last Friday. As the week continues, the men’s four and eight will race Wednesday afternoon. The four will race at 2:20pm in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup against Goldie Boat Club ‘A’, while the eight will open the Temple Challenge Cup at 7:05pm against University of Durham ‘B’. Complete results and recounts of the races will continue to be posted on the HRR and GVSU website.
