On March 18th, the Lakers headed to the other side of Grand Rapids to race in the Grand Rapids Erg Sprints at Forest Hills Central High School. Most of the Lakers fared well, coming up with personal bests for 2,000m sprints.
In the open event, Damaris Lanjopoulos held strong and pulled a 7:08.0 to take home 1st in the women’s race. Ross Anderson took home the hammer as the top Laker man, pulling at 6:12.4 and placing third overall.
The freshmen also performed well. Sarah Zelenka led the way by pulling a 7:10.7 and was followed by Meryl Chaffee at 7:33.5 in the novice women’s race. Geoff Sadek pulled out the victory in the men’s race with a time of 6:19.6. Blake Donovan earned the hammer as the fastest “true” novice on the team with a time of 6:41.1 and 6th place finish. Adam Cecil also took second in the novice lightweight with a time of 6:44.9.
The Lightweights also had a strong day, with Tripp Fay taking home the hammer as fastest maile lightweight and overall title with a time of 6:42.9. He was followed by Mike Sylvester, who pulled a 6:50.5. Although she was the only one in her race, Kristin Granroth still pulled an impressive 7:42.4.
The coxies also got a chance to test their might, doing 1,000m races against eachother. Greg Antioho took fifth in the men’s race while Jessy Meyerhoff and Lisa Malloure took 4th and 5th in thewomen’s race.
The erg race was the only 2k test for the Lakers this season.
