Lakers host Northwestern, Cincinnati, and North Park.

Last Saturday was April Fool’s Day, but the racing was no joke for the Lakers. In their first true home meet in years, being held right at the GVSU boathouse, the Lakers faced off against Northwestern University’s men and women, North Park University’s women and then Cincinnati’s men later on.
In the eights, the men managed to top Northwestern by over 14 seconds while the women put two boats in front of the Northwestern boat. Both men and women’s freshmen boats won, with the women beating both North Park and Northwestern in separate races. The second women’s freshmen eight also defeated Northwestern’s and North Park’s second eights.
The Lakers also dominated the fours racing. The men’s A lightweight four came in first while the women had winners in all their four-races, which included three different races that had lightweight and heavyweight crews.
The Lakers had different luck against Cincinnati. In the closest race of the year for the Lakers, the men’s varsity eight lost by .1 of a second, 5:23.71-5:23.81 to Cincinnati as the Bearcat’s bowball sneaked across the finish line first. The Lakers also lost in the JV and Freshmen eight races and in the pair. The lightweight men did pull off a victory against Cincinnati, winning by about 10 seconds in the four race.
The Lakers will have next weekend off from racing other teams as they prepare for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, their first championship race of the season, on April 14 and 15.
