On Saturday, May 6, the Lakers took on the some of the best competition that Midwest has to offer at the Mid-American Collegiate Rowing Association regatta in Athens, Ohio.
Many Lakers performed well, as most boats were using this race as a final preparation regatta for the Dad Vail Regatta. Overall, the Lakers came in second in the team scoring, coming in behind only The Ohio State University, who had entered five more boats than GVSU.
In the finals, the varsity men’s four had a collision with Marietta in the middle of the race but managed to come back to take second behind Dayton. The JV women took second in the eight. The novice women took home gold in the eight and silver in the four. The novice men also had a strong performance, taking second in a “too close to call” eight race with Michigan and Mercyhurst while also claiming 4th in the four race. The lightweight women’s four placed 4th.
To end the day of racing, the varsity women stormed through their competition to take home gold in the eight, while the varsity men claimed fourth.
The regatta was also used as a stepping stone for Dad Vails, as seven of the boats will be competing in Philadelphia.
