The Grand Valley Rowing Team dominated at the Mid-American Collegiate Rowing Association Championship this past weekend, winning the overall team point’s trophy for the first time in the regatta’s 22-year history. On their way, five of ten Laker crews snagged first place finishes with two others also bringing home medals.
The Varsity Men’s 8+ crossed the finish line with a commanding lead over the competition, earning themselves gold medals. After sailing through heats, the Lakers really showed what they could do in the final, crushing second-best Mercyhurst by twelve seconds and finishing with a time of 6:14.96
After one of the boats scratched, heats for the Varsity Women’s 8+ were canceled, sending them straight to finals. The Lakers were neck and neck with Mercyhurst for the first half of the race until Grand Valley started to pull away at the turn. At about 700 meters left, the Lakers really made their move, taking another three seats on Mercyhurst and staying that way until the finish. GVSU crossed the line first with a time of 7:21.13.
After MSU scratched, the Men’s Second Varsity 8+ ended up in a lane next to rivals Mercyhurst College. The Lakers found themselves behind in the first 500, but fought back even by the turn. That’s when the Lakers made their move, pulling ahead and waling away the rest of the race. Their time of 6:25.50 put them ahead of Mercyhurst and the rest of the competition to take home gold.
The Novice Women’s 8+ was impressive again as they won both their heat and final essentially uncontested, beating Ohio State to take the gold by 15 seconds and posting a time of 7:02.17. The girls remain undefeated through the spring season.
The Men’s Novice 8+ had an epic race, defeating Dayton and Ohio State on their way to a first place finish. After easily sailing through their heat, the Lakers had to fight in their final. But after rowing a personal best race, the competition was no match for Grand Valley as their time of 6:13.22 beat second place by four seconds.
In their first time in the pair this season, Ashley Robinson and Lauren Holben rowed a solid race to a second place finish in the Women’s Varsity Pair. Boat lengths ahead of the other crews, the ladies showed their awesome potential for the Dad Vail.
The Women’s Second Varsity 8+ finished out their season with a bang, bringing bronze medals home with them. The Lakers fought hard to stick with the top two boats, leaving the rest of the crews definitively behind them.
After a decisive second place finish in heats, the Varsity Men’s 4+ earned a spot to compete for MACRA gold. An impressive start put the Lakers in second place through the thousand-meter mark, but they fell just short of a medal, ending the race in fourth place with a time of 6:55.92. The four gets another chance against first and second place Mercyhurst and Dayton at this weekend’s Dad Vail.
Jumping out of the four and into the Men’s Varsity Pair were Justin Ott and Mark McClusky for their third race of the day. Their time of 7:39.16 granted them a fourth place finish.
Though stuck in the fastest heat, the Novice Women’s 4+ finished their last race of the season strong with their best performance yet. The Lakers dropped over a minute off their time throughout the spring, but came up just short of making the final by finishing third in their heat.
After a strong performance this weekend, the Lakers will then train in Parkersburg, West Virginia until Wednesday. They will then make their way to Philadelphia, PA for the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta May 9-10 where they hope to put forth an equally impressive performance.
