Katie Higgens Katie Higgens, (2010) - Secretary

Adam Cecil Adam Cecil, (2009) - Trustee
I started rowing my freshman year of high school at Grosse Ile, an island in the Detroit River, and haven’t stopped since. I was originally attracted to rowing because I wanted to travel, but fell in love with rowing for what’s at its core: character development, discipline, passion and grace. However, the traveling aspect would be fulfilled as well seeing that I have been to Boston, Florida, Oklahoma, Niagara Falls and England within the last year.

When I started rowing, I was awful, weighing 135 pounds and pulling a 8:13 2K (a time easily broken by most girls), but by the time I left Grosse Ile I had received such rewards as most improved, MVP and was the only male of my class to continue rowing in college.

My original attraction to Grand Valley was because of its competitive club rowing and the recent hiring of Coach Bancheri. Currently, I am having the pleasure of being a part of this program in its heyday.

My career at the Dad Vails (our national championship) consist of the three Grand Finals appearances in the three major eights: novice, lightweight, and heavyweight.

After being here for three years, I have really grown close to Grand Valley’s amazing curriculum and campus life as well. Grand Valley has provided a great all around experience that I hope to give back to some day. Now, I am currently majoring in my other passion of sociology while working on a minor in history. After college I plan to either teach, coach, row, or all three.
