weekend, as top collegiate rowing teams from around the country and
Canada come to complete in the 16th Annual Lubbers Cup Regatta.
On Saturday, April 2, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Rowing Club will host the annual Lubbers Cup Regatta from the Spring Lake Yacht Club. Several competing teams include, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Brock University (Canada), Ohio State University, University of Virginia and the Coast Guard Academy. ”The 16th Annual Lubbers Cup Regatta promises to be the best one in the history of the event,” John Bancheri, GVSU’s Director of Rowing and Varsity Men’s Head Coach stated. The schedule of events begins at 8 a.m. until the awards ceremony at 3:00 p.m.
The Regatta is free and open to the public. Races can be viewed from
the Spring Lake Yacht Club. Parking is limited at this viewing

Special this year, the U.S. Coast Guard will kick off the event with an
over-flight by a H65 helicopter from Air Station Traverse City at
9:55am, following the performance of the National Anthems of Canada and the United States. Proper protocol during the National Anthem is to stand at attention, facing the flag with the right hand over the heart; hats should be removed.
The local communities including the Village of Spring Lake, Spring Lake
Township, and the City of Ferrysburg, along with the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Grand Haven Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival are excited to be members of the host location for this annual event. Rowing has long taken place on the areas waterways, dating back to 1874 when the Grand Haven & Spring Lake Rowing Association sponsored an invitational regatta on Spring Lake, attracting participants from Detroit and Chicago. That same year, a local resident, Frank E. Yates, won the American Championship.
Chamber President, Joy Gaasch stated, “Partnering with GVSU to bring
rowers from all over the country to Spring Lake is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our communities to parents, students and
faculty. With a sense of pride we can all celebrate Spring Lake’s
amazing heritage in the sport of rowing.”
