Laker Navy Competes in SDCC
The Laker Navy Varsity 8+’s competed this past weekend at the annual San Diego Crew Classic. Both men and women moved onto their respective grand finals on Sunday after qualifying Saturday morning.
The day started off with the varsity women’s 8+, competing in the DII/DIII Club Women’s event. After a good race on Saturday, the crew had a strong start to the 2017 spring season, finishing third behind Western Washington and Humboldt State University. When asked about the race, women’s co-head coach Allison Sobiech replied: “It was a solid start to the season. We have a starting point and we know where to go from here.”
The men had a challenging afternoon, finishing sixth behind the winner University of California Santa Clara. Captain Rob Hiner had this to say: “Not the result we wanted. Any of us wanted. But it was a launch point for the rest of the spring and we have Lubbers Cup this weekend to work towards. Everyone is on the same page and equally dedicated to our boat’s success.”
Thank you to all of the supporters of the team, and another thank you to Anne Varner Clancy for dinner Saturday evening. This upcoming weekend the GVSU Rowing Club will be host the Lubbers Cup Regatta on spring Lake. Check back here for more updates. We look forward to seeing you there!
